Art History

Art History Group

The talks which form the basis of the Art History Group’s monthly meetings are given and illustrated by the members themselves with the occasional invited speaker. The subjects covered range far and wide and are not limited to fine art, that is, painting, but cover the history of crafts such as pottery, embroidery and much more. We try not to repeat a particular subject within a three to four year period and the following are the presentations which were presented last year.

  • Medieval Illustrations & Marginalia
  • Whistler & Plas Newydd
  • Art of the San People in S.Africa
  • George Romney and his Muse
  • Art Nouveau and Darmstadt
  • Edward Lear
  • Dame Laura Knight
  • Dragons

The Art of the San People was illustrated with the speaker’s own photographs;

While a more modern artist, Carl Whitfield, was presented by Rosemarie Heasman and one of his paintings is illustrated below.

There are 15 members in the group at present and we would like to welcome others to join us from experts willing to share your knowledge with us to complete novices who would like to learn more. The meetings are run on a very informal basis (with access to power point facilities) if required, on the third Friday morning of the month in the Chiltern Room of the Village Centre staring at 10.30am. In July we organise an outing to somewhere with an art history connection and in January we have a New Year’s Lunch at a local pub.
