News & Information

Please note

·       The AGM has been moved from 19 July to 26 July. The limited seating capacity of the Village Hall has meant that we have not been able to allow Associate Members to attend the Monthly Meetings and this, of course, has prevented them from participating in the Annual General Meeting and, therefore, of having any direct input into the running of our U3A. In order to redress this situation in future the Annual General Meeting will be held on a separate meeting – on the FOURTH Thursday of July

CHATTR

Ø Chinnor, Haddenham, Thame & District, Greater Thame and Ridgeway (CHATTR)

The Chinnor U3A is part of a local grouping with Haddenham, Thame and District, Greater Thame and Ridgeway U3As, collectively called CHATTR, which arranges some combined meetings.

The Chairmen of the local U3As, CHATTR, decided that these U3As are too far away from the Thames to get involved in the Thames Valley Network Riverside Project but that if a similar project could be undertaken for the local River Thame this would complement the main project.

The Aims of the project:

1 - To find out more about our local river, the Thame, the brooks and streams that flow into it, and the history and points of interest of the area.

2 - To organise walks, both short and long, based around the River Thame and its feeder streams, with information on places of interest.

3 - To get volunteers from the 4 U3A’s working together.

4 - To make a presentation on the River Thame, its streams and surrounding area

The project is being co-ordinated by Rob Byles of Thame & District U3A If you are interested in getting involved please contact click here http://www.bucksinfo.net/u3ahaddenham/local-u3a-networks/

Shared Learning Projects

Ø  The Third Age Trust advertised Shared Learning Projects which any member may attend.

Researching the Battle of Flodden: An exiting new SLP!

Are you interested in history? Would you like to get involved in researching one of the famous battles between the Scots and the English?

2013 will be the 500th anniversary of this memorable battle but not many people seem to know where or when it took place. The battle site is at Branxton on the border south of Coldstream in Northumberland.

Did you know, for instance, that militia men who fought in the battle came from as far afield as Lancashire, Yorkshire and Suffolk? Do you think you could possibly have a relative who fought in the Battle of Flodden?

We are looking for U3A members from all over the country, who would like to get involved in this exciting project to find a list of names of commoners (levy soldiers) who fought (and died) in the Battle of Flodden on the 9th September 1513. We would then hope to use this information to see how the levy might have affected small communities by comparing these with WW1 (for example the Accrington Pals Brigade).

We already have some papers and various websites where you can get started.

If you are interested in getting involved in this possible Shared Learning Project please click here http://www.u3a.org.uk/shared-learning-projects/news-from-regions.html

Useful Information

v  An interesting article

o   You have probably thought about what to do with your possessions when you die but have you thought about your rights to computer files, passwords, on-line accounts e-mails, and social networking sites that you may have joined?

o   A firm called Thomas Eggar has put together a 25 page pdf file about this subject and it makes very interesting reading.  Go to www.thomaseggar.com and search for “digital inheritance” or to go directly to the document click http://www.thomaseggar.com/webfiles/pdfs/Digital%20Legacy%20-%20Jan%202010.pdf

v  Mobile phones

ICE (In Case of Emergency)

If you own a mobile telephone it is a good idea to record a telephone number that can be used if anyone needs to contact someone on your behalf in an emergency.  It is a generally accepted practice to record this number in your “names” list as ICE.  If you want to add several numbers just use ICE1, ICE2 etc.

Your mobile phone can also be used for things other than just calling friends and family.

Here are a few things that can be done in times of grave emergencies.

v  In an emergency

The Emergency Number worldwide for Mobile is 112. If you find yourself out of the coverage area of your mobile; network and there is an emergency, dial 112 and the mobile will search any existing network to establish the emergency number for you, and interestingly this number 112 can be dialled even if the keypad is locked.

v  Have you locked your keys in the car?

Does your car have remote keyless entry? This may come in handy someday. Good reason to own a cell phone:

If you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are at home, call someone at home on their mobile phone from your cell phone.  Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the person at your home press the unlock button, holding it near the mobile phone on their end. Your car will unlock. Saves someone from having to drive your keys to you. Distance is no object. You could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach someone who has the other "remote" for your car, you can unlock the doors (or the trunk).

v  Hidden Battery Power

Imagine your mobile battery is very low. To activate, press the keys *3370# your mobile will restart with this reserve and the instrument will show a 50% increase in battery. This reserve will get charged when you charge your mobile next time.

v  How to disable a stolen mobile phone?

To check your Mobile phone's serial number, key in the following digits on your phone: * # 0 6 #

A 15 digit code will appear on the screen. This number is unique to your handset. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe. When your phone gets stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them this code. They will then be able to block your handset so even if the thief changes the SIM card, your phone will be totally useless. You probably won't get your phone back, but at least you know that whoever stole it can't use/sell it either. If everybody does this, there would be no point in people stealing mobile phones.
